'Texas State Capitol' - Austin - Texas - USA
The Texas State Capitol is located in Austin, Texas, and is one of the oldest surviving state capitols in the United States. The building was designed by Elijah E. Myers, who was the state?s first architect. The Capitol was completed in 1888 and has a distinctive pink granite exterior.
When looking at the rear view of the Texas State Capitol, you will see the south side of the building which includes a large portico made up of 16 Corinthian columns. The portico is supported by a pediment and is decorated with Texas symbols including the Texas Lone Star, the state?s official bird, the mockingbird, and the state flower, the bluebonnet. There is also a bronze statue of the Goddess of Liberty atop the dome. From the rear view, visitors can also admire the intricate carvings and sculptures that adorn the Capitol?s exterior.
Underneath the Capitol are two levels of underground chambers, known as the basement and the subterranean chambers. The basement houses a variety of offices, including the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate. The subterranean chambers are located below the basement and were originally used as storage, but now they are home to several monuments and memorials, including the Texas Women?s Memorial and the Texas African American Memorial.
