'Horseshoe Bend' - Page - Arizona - USA
Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona. The bend is located just a few miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and it's accessible via a short, easy hike from a nearby parking area. The viewpoint offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the bend, where the river makes a 270-degree turn, and the rock walls rise as high as 1000 feet above the river surface.
The Horseshoe Bend is a unique geologic feature that was created by the erosive force of the Colorado River over millions of years. The river's current and sediment load have worn away at the softer layers of rock, creating the horseshoe shape and exposing the harder rock layers. The erosion has also created a series of natural amphitheaters and rock formations around the bend, which are visible from the viewpoint.
This was a mile hike from the parking lot but the heat creeps up on you and makes it quite strenuous. Added to this I had heavy camera gear and my dog couldn't manage the walk back so I had to carry her as well. Nevertheless the reward is this stunning view that is so high up it is vertigo inducing which was not great considering the only way to get a clear shot was to be as far out on the edge as possible, The final shot was so high resolution that it took over 15 minutes to take of which I hated every second.
